Greek and Roman Mythology

Listen

Author's note-This is my response to the myth of the sphinx, but it's actually mostly about Edipus. This story is pretty disturbing to me, because he marries his own mother which I'm sure is equally disturbing to him. I sometimes do things i regret when I ignore the advice of others, but after this story it kind of shows how important it is to listen to others when they give you advice.

How many people do you advise things to do and they completely ignore your advice? Some do it out of stupidity. Others are just two blind to see what is right in front of them. People end up doing extremely things or things they absolutely regret when they don't listen to the advice of others.

In the story of the Sphinx Edipus defeats him with his head held high with the mind set that he could conquer anything. His life turned out to be a huge tragedy, because of his own stupidity. Common sense is essential, and that is what he lacked. Without knowing it he married his own mother. His wise and trustworthy friend warned him and he ignored his advice. Edipus took his eyeballs out, because he was blind even with his eyes, so why should he deserve to see?

Terrible mistakes like these can be easily avoided when you do things as simple as listen to others. I know that I have done things that people advised me not to do and later regretted it, so why do we continue to ignore other peoples advice? It really doesn't make any sense, but the next time we are advised not to do something keep this story in mind and it may save you some regret.

Gorgons

Author's note-Unfortunately, I feel like I know many people who are Gorgons. Gorgons are a mythological monster that is the manifestation of a person who gives an illusion of beauty to draw you in but truly is very evil. They're supposed to take care of you when you need it, but they don't.

Their beauty, their perfection?

It's all an illusion.

You thought you loved them?
It was as fake as their beauty.

They're always going to be their for you?
And when you need them, they betray you.

This person was evil, you say?
They were a gorgon in your life.

Love Before Greed

Author's note-King Midas is the story of the king who wishes to have everything he touches turn to gold. I've met people who aren't as bad as King Midas, but just never seem to be happy with what they have and it's kind of sad to see.

In the Greek and Roman myths they have heroes, which can show the good in people, but the heroes always get a punishment of some sort. They have Gods which are supposed to show us traits we should have and things we should do. Then they have monsters, which show human flaws and evils. King Midas, even though he's a king, has huge flaws and could even be considered a monster for he was very destructive.

Almost everyone has that person in their life that never seems to be content with anything they have. They let greed take over their happiness and always want more and more. That person is a King Midas. He was king, which most people would think once you were king what more could you ever want? No, King Midas wanted much more wealth and carelessly wished for everything he touched to turn to gold. His wish turned on him terribly. Now he couldn't hold his own daughter which was terrible for him, and he couldn’t stand it. King Midas picked up his daughter and turned her to gold.

Greed is a terrible trait to have and can give you unthinkable consequences. Although no one could ever get taught a lesson as well as King Midas did by having his own daughter turn to gold, nothing good can come out of it. Always wanting more from life will never get you anywhere. Finding happiness in your life and achievements is important.

The Gift of Fire

Author's note-I'm not very proud of this piece, because I wrote kind of late one night. I feel like it trails off at about the third paragraph and that not all of it fits with my thesis statement.

Greek and Roman myths are important allegories to life and how things came to be. At the time of the creation of these stories it was before religion had come about. For people who have religions that are important to them and look at the stories within their religion as symbols that take place in real life, that is exactly what these myths were to the Greek and Roman people. The story that came about first could be the most important to humans, because it shows us the difference between us and animals.

The thought of humans having nothing to differ us from animals is extremely strange, so what is the difference? In the creation of Earth Prometheus granted us fire from heaven. Fire symbolizes our morals and beliefs along with religions, and that is what animals lack.

Jupiter was mad at Prometheus and his brother for stealing fire from heaven, so she sent the first woman to earth as a punishment. Her name was Pandora and she was made with every god contributing something to perfect her. Epimetheus gladly accepted her, but was warned by his brother of Jupiter's gifts. She was very eager and filled with curiosity and one day opened a jar kept in his house which released evils into the world, but kept only one thing inside of it, hope.

The story of Prometheus and Pandora was created to show us our differences from animals. It also showed us some of the very first important events. Pandora, in my opinion, was an allegory of how curiosity can get the best of us. She was made to seem perfect and then made a big mistake by releasing evils into our earth.

Moda

Authors note-I really am not proud of this piece and would appreciate feedback. I feel like writing fiction is definately not a strong point and this piece needs some work.

I was new to our school and our family had just moved into town. It's difficult in a new school deciding who to trust, but I thought I had decided on who would end up being my new friend. She was tall and not very attractive with wet looking short brown hair, but seemed really nice. I thought I would fit in with her well because we both had a lot of the same classes together, so I thought we might have some of the same interests. During one of the classes we had together we were put together as partners for a lab. As soon as we started talking we seemed to click.
We made plans to hang out after school and she came over to my house. All we did was talk the whole time. In no time we became extremely close! She already shared many of her deep secrets with me. I felt as though I could trust her with anything! I told her many of my secrets too and I thought I had made a new best friend! The entire weekend we spent together and It seemed as though every day we would become closer and closer.
After our weekend ended Monday at school started out as a normal day, but as it went on people would stare at me or point and say something to one another. I couldn't figure out what it was. Finally, someone came up to me and asked me about a secret I had only told Moda. She told me I could trust her and she wouldn't tell anyone, but now she had completely broken my trust. As the day drug by she must have told more people even more of my secrets, because I had gotten asked about even more of them.

The person who I thought I could trust, and who I thought I could tell anything to, ended up completely breaking my trust. I tried to be careful in the beginning to see who I could trust before I opened up, and I was betrayed. Moda was a monster and I didn't even realize it. Trust is an important thing and once it's broken, is hard to be rebuilt.
